Jim Carroll spoke at the Convention Centre in London Ontario for TechAlliance members last week, and the general theme of his talk was centered around moving past the “meltdown mindset” that seems to be overtaking many companies. He argued that there has been many recessions, in fact he has witnessed several, and it is those companies that use these slow times as an opportunity to innovate where others hide their heads in the sand.
Very inspiring talk – I agreed with many of his points here. It was nothing new – but I think people need to be reminded.

What really struck me, besides his inspiring words, was what followed in the question and answer period of his address. A woman asked, following a long discourse, how they as management could help to get their staff as pumped as they were for change, growth and innovation? How did they bring their excitement home? This is the kind of thinking that really holds companies back – executive belief that they know best.
